Course Description:
This course provides an overview of the theories, methods and current issues in biological anthropology. In lectures you will learn about the genetic basis of human variation, micro- and macroevolution, primate evolution and behavior, human evolution, paleopathology, skeletal biology, forensic anthropology and our current understanding of the biological basis for race. Laboratory sessions have a small number of students and are led by the teaching assistants. Labs will provide hands-on access to human and nonhuman primate skeletal material and fossil casts as well as exercises in genetics, phylogeny, comparative anatomy and forensics.

Required Texts:
(JR) John Relethford. (2003) The Human Species: An Introduction to Biological Anthropology, 5th ed. Guilford, CT: McGraw Hill.
(AE) Annual Editions: Physical Anthropology 03/04. (2003) Guilford, CT: McGraw Hill.
(DF) France, Diane L. (2001) Lab Manual and Workbook for Physical Anthropology, 4th ed.
Belmont, CA: Wadsworth.
Recommended Text:

Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.

Course Requirements
:
1. Attendance in laboratory sections is required. Section hopping is not permitted.
2. Assigned readings from the texts are required and will be incorporated into exams, quizzes and discussions.
3. Two exams and one final, all cumulative (100 points each). ALL make-up exams are 100% essay questions.
4. Four graded laboratory exercises (10 points per exercise, 80 points total)
5. Two scheduled and two pop laboratory quizzes (10 points each). There will be NO make-up quizzes. One scheduled quiz score will be dropped.
Grading:
All grades are based on a standard scale. There is no curving of scores or grades.
