River Pebbles

River Pebbles and Other Items

We found a large number of pebbles and cobbles in the excavations that must have been brought to the site from the Euphrates since the hamlet sits on a natural hill of relatively pure silty clay. The pebbles were sorted by color, size, weight and presence/ absence of use wear. Most of them had a greenish or grey-black color, and some were white-speckled. Unbroken, unused specimens are likely to have been brought into the site without any intention of further use. Some of those might have been collected for purely aesthetic or other reasons unknown to us. It is too early to argue whether and how a preference for certain kinds of “naturally” shaped or colored stones could be of importance for a better understanding of Halafian culture in general.

More than half of the small sample of river pebbles analyzed had some traces of use. Four different kinds of use-wear were found on the items recorded. Apart from linear, parallel scratches, some pebbles showed curvilinear or other striations and wear; some items were polished or at least smoothed, often on a flat side. Finally, two pieces showed signs of soot or burning.
