Shaped Clay

Shaped Clay

In order to ensure the recovery of small clay objects such as figurine fragments and sealings, in the 2000 season we retrieved lightly baked clay fragments from screens. These pieces were washed, dried, and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. While the majority of pieces were amorphous, the procedure of recovery turned out to be especially useful for retrieval of small, shaped baked clay objects, such as tokens or clay tags. The majority of these pieces were roughly shaped disks or spheres. There were also hemispheres, cones, triangles, and wedge-shaped pieces. Parallels are found at Tell Sabi Abyad. Some disks had finger impressions, and one of the shaped pieces preserves an impression of a fairly fine textile.

In addition to the small baked clay pieces, three large fragments of distinctive coarse clay with large straw and mineral inclusions were found. These are shaped on one or more sides and appear to have been parts of stands. The best preserved example is approximately 10 cm in diameter and 20 cm high. The bottom portion of the stand was originally attached to the floor of a pit. The top part was shaped into three round protrusions with flat ends to support a vessel or some other object. The clay is brittle which suggests that the stand was exposed to fairly low fires.
